Basic Skills in Marriage and Family Counseling: A Systemic Approach

This course is designed to acquaint participants who are unfamiliar with the systemic approach to counseling, with basic knowledge and skills in marriage and family counseling.

The main elements are taken from the standard graduate programme in marriage and family therapy (MFT) and abbreviated to enable participants acquire, in a short course, the fundamental skills that they can use in their appropriate work places, in pastoral settings and other contexts.

For Whom

 Individuals who desire to enter the counselling field; Counsellors unfamiliar with the systemic method; NGO managers devoted to providing psychological and counselling help; Pastors and Priests; Human Resource Managers; School counsellors; 

Expected Outcome

At the end of the programme, successful participants would have acquired basic skills to enable them:
01.

Have a working knowledge of the field of marriage and family therapy

02.

Recognize obvious symptoms of psychopathology in couples and family clientele

03.

Become fully aware of their limits of practice competence and thus direct clients rightly to professional counsellors

04.

Conduct first level assessment of clients within their competence level

05.

Provide first-step interventions in moments and areas of dire need where there are no professionally trained and licensed counsellors and where problems are neither deep-seated, intractable or pathologically grave.

06.

Develop practical strategies that enable high-performing managers and maximize this integration.

Intermediate Certificate in Marriage and Family Counselling: A Systemic Approach

This course is designed to acquaint participants who have passed successfully the Basic Skills programme in marriage and family therapy. 

The main elements are taken from the standard graduate programme in marriage and family therapy (MFT) and abbreviated to enable participants acquire, in a short course, further skills and competence beyond the basic level that they can use in their work places, in pastoral settings and other contexts. A strong emphasis is placed in understanding social, economic and cultural environment of clients in counseling.

Graduates of the Basic Skills Course. Other participants may be evaluated for inclusion in a special cohort

Duration

 Four Months

Practicum: 6 weeks 

Expected Outcome

At the end of the programme, successful participants would have acquired skills and competencies to enable them:

Advanced Certificate in Marriage and Family Counseling: A Systemic Approach

This course is a diploma-level course equivalent to the core curriculum of the first year of Masters degree in family counseling, designed for participants who have passed through the Basic and Intermediate Certificates in systemic approach to marriage and family counseling.

Emphasis is on acquiring near-professional level competence in family counseling to meet the needs of clients who have no access to full professional counseling services.

Graduates of the Intermediate Certificate programme. Other participants may be evaluated for inclusion in a special cohort.

Duration

 Four Months

Practicum: 12 weeks

At the end of the programme, successful participants would have acquired advanced skills to enable them:

Develop deeper insights into the field of marriage and family therapy with focus on most recent models

02.

Develop skills in multilateral approaches to intervention in psychopathology

03.

Work with clinical professionals across different modalities and approaches 

04.

Conduct deeper level assessment of clients

05.

Understand the place of law, religion, ethics and culture in family counseling 

06.

Provide needed interventions within their level of competence to address problems of addiction, non-psychiatric care of persons with serious mental illness, and assist in the psychological management of families in crisis
